When you begin using the CD-ROM you can see the entire grid with all of the 56 rectangular boxes visible. The grid is divided horizontally into eight rows, one for each of the main subjects, and vertically into seven columns that represent periods of time. (The first column contains material from the years 1831 to 1971. Each of the others represents a four-year period.)
You can narrow down your search for material in two ways:
1. Click on a Subject picture on the left-hand side of the screen. This will give you a list of sections within the Subject. Click on a Section title and you will get a list of Topics which, when clicked, give you a list of related articles.
2. Click on a box in the contents grid. You will zoom into that box, and from there you will see pictures and headlines for that period. Click on a time period at the top of the screen and you can view more articles by clicking their headlines.
You can move, horizontally or vertically, to boxes next to the one you are in by moving the cursor to the edge of the box, where it then turns into an arrow. Select the new box by clicking on this area.
This allows you to move around the grid one box at a time.
Another way to change location is by moving the cursor over the miniature GRID icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. You can move around the entire grid, at random, by clicking on any of the small boxes, all of which correspond to boxes on the main grid.
Click on 'Show Example' in this window for illustrations of how to use the contents grid.
